This is a section of a larger photo of Governors Bay. Sorry it's rather fuzzy. The photo is dated 1925. If we didn't have a date, how would we know? Murray Radcliffe pointed out the location of the original store (Miss Blakeaway's), below the Ocean View Hotel, where the Frame Reserve is now. Thanks Murray. I think the store burnt down (can someone confirm?). Later the store was rebuilt across the road where She Chocolat is now.
We also know that this photo can't have been taken before early 1925 because it features the newly built (completed late 1924) Cholmondeley Children's Home.
From Murray Radcliffe (thanks Murray!)
ReplyDeleteJane, you ask "did the original shop burn down?' Yes it did, I think around 1930 ish. A new smaller two room shop was build immediately after over the road on the site of She. The She was built in 1963/64 for the Campbell sisters, Nancy and Olive, who continued the run it as a general store. My wife's father, Tom Jones, was the builder. The two room store had a third room built onto the rear in 1936 by my father,my parents were the shop proprietors for ten years, 1935 - 1945. Born in 1940 I spent most of my first five years in and around the shop while my parents and oldest sister ran the shop. I have a number of photos from those years of family members and others gathered outside the shop from time to time.
